Why accessible features end up serving everyone

A feature designed to remove one specific barrier often removes several adjacent ones nobody was explicitly designing for. Lever door handles, originally pushed as an accommodation for people with limited hand strength or grip, turn out to be easier for almost everyone to use one-handed while carrying groceries. Wide, step-free building entrances built for wheelchair access also work better for delivery workers, parents with strollers, and anyone temporarily on crutches. Buildings that treat accessibility as a compliance checklist tend to produce technically adequate but visibly separate solutions — the ramp around the side, the accessible entrance that isn’t the main one, the accommodation that works but signals itself as an afterthought. Buildings that integrate accessibility from the earliest design stage tend to produce a single solution that works for everyone without a visible seam between the "normal" version and the "accessible" version. The second approach usually costs little more than the first. It requires deciding, before the floor plan is fixed, that accessibility is a design problem worth solving well rather than a box to check once the real design is already finished.
